eNTERFACE’08 international summer workshop on multimodal interfaces

Workshop Details
eNTERFACE08 is the next of a series of successful workshops initiated by SIMILAR, the European Network of Excellence (NoE) on Multimodal interfaces. eNTERFACE'08 will follow the fruitful path opened by eNTERFACE05 in Mons, Belgium, continued by eNTERFACE06 in Dubrovnik, Croatia and eNTERFACE07 in Istambul, Turkey. SIMILAR came to an end in 2007, and the eNTERFACE workshops are now under the aegis of the OpenInterface Foundation.
03 August 2008 - 28 August 2008   LIMSI, in Orsay (near Paris), France

The eNTERFACE summer workshops are a new type of European workshops devoted to research on multimodal interfaces. They aim at establishing a tradition of collaborative, localized R&D work by gathering in a single place a group of senior project leaders, researchers, and (undergraduate) students, working together on a pre-specified list of challenges, for 4 weeks. Participants are organized in teams, attached to specific projects working on modular software.
Building on the success of eNTERFACE’05 (Faculté Polytechnique de Mons, Belgium, July-August 2005), eNTERFACE’06 (University of Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Croatia, July-August 2006), and eNTERFACE’07 (Bogaziçi Universtiy, Istanbul, Turkey, July-August 2007), the eNTERFACE steering Committee now invites project proposals for a summer workshop on multimodal interfaces to be held at The Computer Sciences Laboratory for Mechanics and Engineering Sciences (LIMSI) in Orsay (south of Paris), France from August 4th to August 29th 2008.
eNTERFACE workshops will be supported by the OpenInterface Foundation, the European non-profit organization created by the SIMILAR Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission in FP6 with the mission to coordinate, expand and integrate activities of its members in the field of multimodal interface research.
The workshop will be enriched by tutorials giving state-of-the art survey of aspects of multimodal interfaces design, given by an invited senior researcher. The ultimate goal is to make this event a unique opportunity for students and experts all over Europe to meet and effectively work together, so as to foster the development of tomorrow's multimodal research community.
Project submissions on all topics related to the OpenInterface objectives (see below) will be considered. The projects should cover both the Human Computer Interactions and the Signal Processing issues of multimodal interfaces design. Proposals integrating a component based approach based on the OpenInterface platform will be favoured.

Topics of interest:
• Multimodal signal analysis and synthesis
• Innovative modalities and modalities conversion
• Signal-level and meaning-level data fusion and fission
• Multimodality for plasticity
• User, context and semantics-aware self-learning and
• Multimodality for biometrics adapting systems and security
• Intuitive interfaces and personalized communication systems in real-world and virtual environments
• Edutainment and learning assistance interfaces
• Multimodal conversational systems
• Medical applications
• Usability
• Embodied agents

Deadlines:
December 17th, 2007: Reception of the complete Project proposal in the format provided by the Author's kit
January 10rd, 2008: Notification of project acceptance
February 1st, 2008: Publication of the Call for Participation
August 4th — August 29th, 2008: eNTERFACE’08 Workshop

Proposals for research projects will be screened by a Scientific Committee composed of OpenInterface leaders for suitability to the workshop goals and format. A call for PhD students and researchers participation to projects will then be launched on January 5th, 2008, including a special call for undergraduate students participation. The authors of the accepted proposals will be then invited to build their teams.
