The goals of the usability WP in HUMAINE is discussed in other pages. Here we would like to start the literature review for usability of emotional systems.

Katherine Isbister and Kristina Höök have created a strawman for the literature review that you are welcome to comment and to start editing. Please feel free to start adding references to the pages that correspond to each part in the literature review (click on the question marks or page links to add something):

WP9 Literature review structure straw-man

Possible Sections:

Review of current techniques in affective evaluation:

Output interpretation

- [Physiological (heart rate, eeg, skin conductance, etc.)]?

- Survey/questionnaire instruments (standard and custom measures)

- [Observational (video, motion capture, etc) and coding schemes]?

Input techniques

- [Physiological (interpreting and using measures in first section)]?

- [Actual interaction through standard system tools (mouse, keyboard)]?

- [Adaptation through observation (face and gesture detection, etc)]?

Review of potentially useful HCI/Product Design/Advertising techniques:

- [Begin with overview of special needs of affective situations, and context dependency? (modality, leisure or work context, etc.)]?

- Outline working with timeline of design process?

- Participatory design tactics

- Ethnography

- [Prototyping tactics]?

- [Iterative usability tactics]?

- [Studies ‘in the wild’]?

- [End evaluation tactics]?

- [longitudinal studies (relationship formation, etc)]?

Review of mid-range theory grounding affective evaluation:

- Social psychological and communication theory (includes persuasion and media theory)

- [Emotion theory (activation) which of these theories are most useful for evaluation]?

- [Any other relevant space (architecture, sociology, ethnography)]?

- [Theory of rhythm or timing? (e.g. dominance, responsiveness)]?

- [Gender, culture, sub-culture issues and differences in reaction to affective systems]?

- examples of theories

            - concrete depiction can make it too hard for someone to use in expression.

            - integrating body with ideas may cause an affective loop.

            - affective speech is bad in call centers, but not emotionally adaptive expressivity

            - system and user have a social contract which shapes expectations for affect

Review of existing affective evaluation studies:

- [By subject matter (ECAs, music systems, haptic systems, etc)]?

- [Alternatively, by output or input methodology (perhaps a cross-reference of citations?)]?

- (generates list of existing criteria)

Goals/possible outcomes for literature review;

Leads to practical suggestions: Attach at least two different hypothetical scenarios with suggested mix of existing and HCI-borrowed tactics for each?

(e.g. study ongoing relationship and goals, not just surface reaction; lab studies versus daily life situations; groups versus individual)

Leads to list of desirable criteria: Set overarching goals of usability of affective systems.

Leads to list of areas it is used and useful…

Do we need an overview defining what we mean by affective system? (cmc, non-ECA, ECA, etc; and application areas—entertainment, work task, ecommerce, games)

Out of scope: evaluating which models
