European Union IST project contract no. 507422

http://emotion-research.net

This is a Call for new members to join for the remainder of the project (31st December 2007).  Successful applicants will be awarded European Commission funding to participate in the activities of Humaine.

HUMAINE (Human-Machine Interaction Network on Emotion) is a Network of Excellence in the EU's Sixth Framework Programme in the IST (Information Society Technologies) Thematic Priority IST-2002-2.3.1.6 Multimodal Interfaces.  The Network started on 1st January 2004, and is set out to run for four years. Twenty-seven partners from 11 countries participate in the network.

HUMAINE aims to lay the foundations for European development of systems that can register, model and/or influence human emotional and emotion-related states and processes - 'emotion-oriented systems'.  HUMAINE brings together leading experts from the key disciplines in a programme designed to achieve intellectual integration. It identifies six thematic areas that cut across traditional groupings and offer a framework for an appropriate division of labour - theory of emotion; signal/sign interfaces; the structure of emotionally coloured interactions; emotion in cognition and action; emotion in communication and persuasion; and usability of emotion-oriented systems.

The criteria for selection are:

  1. Eligible to participate in the European Commission’s Framework Programme 6 (See Regulation (EC) No 2321/2002 at http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/find-doc.htm#other)
  2. Scientific and technological excellence and innovation
  3. Relevance to the objectives of the Thematic Priority IST-2002-2.3.1.6 (http://www.cordis.lu/ist/so/interfaces/home.html) and of HUMAINE (http://emotion-research.net)
  4. Expertise that does not currently exist or should be strengthened within HUMAINE

Prospective members should complete the application form and return to Ruth McAreavey at r.mcareavey@qub.ac.uk.  The closing date for receipt of applications is 10th September, 2004. Supporting information is available here.

Offers received will be evaluated by the HUMAINE consortium in the light of the above criteria and with the assistance of two independent experts.  All new members are subject to ratification by the Commission.  The Network is keen to ensure the equal participation of men and women.
