Workshop First International Workshop on Wide Spectrum Social Signal Processing (WS³P2012) by Björn Schuller, last updated: Thursday, 17 May 2012
A large part of users of Social Computing and Social Signal Processing technology have special needs owing to their special mental conditions such as Autism Spectral Condition or physical limitations. At the same time, Social Computing offers great potential in particular for these users: Many target groups show high affinity to technical systems and practically all of these can be assumed to benefit from social networks and social and affective technical solutions tailored to their needs. As a consequence, there has been a growing interest within the computing community in becoming more engaged in social sciences and more particularly in psychopathologies such as Autism. The WS³P 2012 workshop aims to gather researchers and practitioners in the field of Social Computing, Social Signal Processing, Social Robotics and Psychopathology. Joint research across these communities will have a major impact on methodologies, problems and issues related to users with development or abilities on a wide spectrum.

The purpose of the workshop is to explore the benefits and drawbacks of integrating context on affect production, interpretation and recognition. We wish to investigate what methodologies can be applied to include contextual information in emotion corpora, how it ought to be represented, what contextual information are relevant (i.e. is it domain specific or not?), and how it will improve the performance of existing frameworks for affect recognition.

This workshop concentrates on studies of multimodal expressions of stances in both human-human and human-machine interaction, and on the automatic processing of stances. We aim to bring together researchers from various disciplines (e.g., phonetics, linguistics, psychology, computer science) to foster multidisciplinary discussions on stances in interaction.

Due to many challenging research problems and a wide variety of practical applications, opinion mining and sentiment analysis have become very active research areas in the last decade. Our understanding and knowledge of the problem and its solution are still limited as natural language understanding techniques are still pretty weak. Most of current research in sentiment analysis, in fact, merely relies on machine learning algorithms. Such algorithms, despite most of them being very effective, produce no human understandable results such that we know little about how and why output values are obtained. All such approaches, moreover, rely on syntactical structure of text, which is far from the way human mind processes natural language. The main aim of this IEEE ICCI*CC’12 special session is to examine the new frontiers of opinion mining and sentiment analysis by proposing brain inspired techniques that could allow to better extract and aggregate the cognitive and affective information associated with natural language text.

The INTERSPEECH 2012 Speaker Trait Challenge shall help bridging the gap between excellent research on paralinguistic information in spoken language and low compatibility of results. Three Sub-Challenges are addressed: In the Personality Sub-Challenge, the personality of a speaker has to be determined based on acoustics potentially including linguistics above or below average for the OCEAN five personality dimensions. In the Likability Sub-Challenge, the likability of a speaker's voice has to be determined by a suited learning algorithm and acoustic features. While the annotation provides likability in multiple levels, only two classes have to be recognised accordingly: likability above or below average. In the Pathology Sub-Challenge, the intelligibility of a speaker has to be determined by a suited classification algorithm and acoustic features. The results of the Challenge will be presented at Interspeech 2012 in Portland, Oregon. Prizes will be awarded to the Sub-Challenge winners.

This special issue focuses on the introduction, presentation, and discussion of novel approaches to opinion mining and sentiment analysis that are not entirely based on domain-dependent corpora but also on general-purpose semantic knowledge bases. The main motivation for the issue, in particular, is to go beyond a mere word-level analysis of text and provide novel concept-level approaches to opinion mining and sentiment analysis that allow a more efficient passage from (unstructured) textual information to (structured) machine-processible data, in potentially any domain.

Computational intelligence is a set of Nature-inspired computational methodologies and approaches to address complex real world problems to which traditional methodologies and approaches (first principles, probabilistic, black-box, etc.) are ineffective or infeasible. It includes neural networks, fuzzy logic systems, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, chaos theory, etc. IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI) is the largest and also the most important bi-annual conference on computational intelligence. WCCI 2010 in Barcelona attracted 2525 submissions and over 1800 participants. The Computational Intelligence and Affective Computing special session aims at bringing together researchers from both areas to discuss how computational intelligence algorithm can be used to solve challenging affective computing problems, and how affects (emotions) can inspire new computational intelligence algorithms.

Dr. Hongying Meng is a lecturer at Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of Brunel University (West London, UK). Before that, he held research positions in several UK universities including University College London (UCL), University of York and University of Southampton. He is a honorary research associate of UCL. His research interests include affective computing, digital signal processing, machine learning, computer vision and embedded systems. He is especially interested in emotional states recognition, facial expression analysis, multi-model interaction, movement modelling and computer games. His work entitled "Naturalistic Affective Expression Classification by a Multi-Stage Approach Based on Hidden Markov Models" on emotion recognition has won the audio sub-challenge of First International Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC2011) at international conference ACII2011, Memphis, USA in 2011. This Special Issue of Computer Speech and Language (Elsevier) aims at Broadening the View on Speaker Analysis. It will focus on technical issues for highly improved and robust speaker (and singer) state and trait analysis and provide forum for some of the very best experimental work on this topic.
