Experiment. Reports on a number of attempts to generate expressive speech: an upbeat vs. neutral weather report; a specific voice database recorded for expressing emphasis in combination with non-emphasised speech; and several speaking styles needed for an English-to-Arabic speech-to-speech translation device. Points out that it may be necessary to re-introduce signal manipulation in order to make progress towards more flexible speech synthesis.
