My research focuses on nonverbal behaviors in spoken dialog that express emotion and are commonly used in sociolinguistic processes to reduce social distance and gain rapport. Analysis of numerous corpora will give insight to characterization of emotions, and appropriate responses to these emotions. Eventually this work will lead to spoken dialog systems that can automatically gain rapport through emotionally intelligent, voice-only interaction.
