Research on Emotions and Human-Machine Interaction
Obituary

Fiorella de Rosis
Department of Informatics, University of Bari, Italy
Key research interests:

Affective factors in Human-Machine Interaction. Cognitive and probabilistic models of emotion. Affective persuasion dialogs. Evaluation methods.
With great sadness we learnt about the death of our colleague Fiorella de Rosis. She was one of the outstanding figures in the field. Her research made an absolutely fundamental point, that emotion needs to be integrated into logical models of argument. She was constantly aware of the need to encourage young researchers, as witness the excellent young team that she assembled in Bari, and the major input that she made to the Doctoral Consortium at ACII last year. She was also an idealist to the core, always ready to speak out sharply and clearly when she felt that people were settling for the least awkward rather than the best. But once the debates were done, there was never any doubt of the underlying warmth - and she knew how to show warmth as well as how to make a point. She will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed.

Tool of the day

Belfast Naturalistic Database

The basic unit of the database is a clip, which is an audiovisual recording of an emotional episode, drawn from two main sources. People were recorded discussing emotive subjects either with each other, or with one of the research team. The database also includes recorded extracts from television programs where members of the public interact in a way that appears essentially spontaneous.
