My main problematic was related to the description of emotion and music link, built by every day life exposure to music (Following R. Picard 'cultural and personal background'). Main direction was that inter-individual emotionnal differences while listenning to a piece of music are so strong that we should instead study intra-individual structure and contents. Contents refer to a kind of Long Term Affective Memory.

Using the web-based experiment (see below), I showed (DEA report, LIMSI-CNRS / Univ. of Paris-XI Orsay, France) that intra-individual consistency is strong and that we are able to predict emotional reaction of subject while they listening to music, on the base of transitivity rules and LTAM previous modeling. I was working on  a more general model I call EARMusic (Embodied Affective Relationship to Music), which the aim is to make an analysis by synthesis of emotion reaction of a single user, based on computational modeling of emotions. The E.A.R is the resultant of all individual's affective experiences with its environment, from the birth until now. Main goal was to predict emotional reaction of an user on this modeled E.A.R., with a Java implementation.

I've searched for a PhD in psychology of music/musical informatics/cognitive science/affective user interfaces in order to complete this model, and found a PhD position at Eurecom, under the direction of Christine Lisetti at the Affective Social Computing Lab (Sophia Antipolis, France).

My present work is an extension of the EARMusic model, from music to Multimedia perceived contents (i.e. music, video, images, etc...), keeping in mind the notion of "Embodied Affective Relationship”. The general context of the lab is the work of Christine Lisetti about Multimodal Affective User Interface paradigm (MAUI), which the aim is to model emotion of the user and adapts to it. My contribution to this work is the addition, of the notion of user’s synthesized emotional memory from personal past experiences with multimedia content.
