Fraunhofer IGD Rostock, Usability and Assistive Technologies

The Usability and Assistive Technologies Group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Rostock was founded in the year 2000. With its roots in the fields of Visualization, Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality, Interaction Technologies, and Usability, the group now focusses on assistive technologies in stationary, mobile, and the home context.

Christian Peter
Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Rostock
Key research interests:

affective technologies: affect sensing and recognition (peripheral psychophysiological changes, speech analysis, non-intrusive sensors for affect detection, sensor fusion and multimodal data analysis); cognitive aspects

The research activities of  the group are focussed on and around detecting and analysing user states (emotional, cognitve, physiological and activity) and using the gained information for application design and evaluation, especially assistive technologies.

Examples of emotion related developments and research activities are:

In the field of emotion detection:

  • Development of hard- and software for stationary as well as mobile measuring of peripheral physiological parameters (skin conductance level, skin temperature, heart rate)
  • Design of sustainable sensor networks, especially for affective environments
  • Development of universal logging and analysing tools for any sort of sensor data, high- and low-level devices
  • Facial feature extraction for emotion detection
  • Gaze tracking (especially in usability context)
  • Haptics (mouse, keyboard)
  • Speech analysis (signal analysis, prosodic and semantic analysis)

In the field of emotion analysis:

  • Application and refinement of methods from artificial intelligence, statistics, and neural nets for analysis of sensor data and user behaviour (haptics, gaze)

Emotion related studies/experiments in HCI context using the technologies mentioned above:

  • Theoretical aspects (e.g. structuring emotions, methodology evaluation)
  • Practical aspects (HCI specifics)
